The UCLA Institute of American Cultures

Advancing research for a more just society.

UCLA Institute of American Cultures

The UCLA Institute of American Cultures (IAC) is the administrative hub for our four ethnic studies research centers - American Indian Studies Center, Asian American Studies Center, Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and Chicano Studies Research Center. Together, IAC and its centers work to increase understanding of the emerging social and cultural realities in America through innovative research, events that promote inclusive excellence, fellowships and research grant programs, scholarship and academic excellence, and civic engagement. The formation of these ethnic studies research centers occurred during the turbulent 1960s that saw a demand, especially for public colleges and universities, to serve all the people of California. Today, the centers continue to advance research for a more just society.
