UCLA RADIO
WHO WE ARE
UCLA Radio is made up of over 150 students, who contribute as hosts, DJs, writers, designers, musicians, web developers, photographers, audio engineers, and every other job that it takes to run a radio station. Bruins have been broadcasting at UCLA since 1962, when we were established as an underground radio station in the basement of Dykstra Residential Hall. These days, we stream digitally out of our storage room-turned-studio in Ackerman Union.
Each week, we produce 120 hours of live, housemade programming and content on our website, reaching listeners and readers from around the globe. Through collaborations with more than 25 campus organizations, the addition of over 100 new DJs each year, and an ever-expanding roster of student and local bands, our on-air programming continues to amplify young, fresh creative voices in our community. With the support of our Digital Press and News departments, we also run an online blog where writers chronicle LA’s music scene through show reviews, opinion pieces, artist interviews, and collaborative creative projects.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:
Throughout the past few years, and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, our station missed many key, routine upgrades. This includes replacing broadcast hardware like record needles, DJ equipment, and microphones; cameras and other equipment used to film ISPs and document concerts around Los Angeles; and carpet cleaning for our station, which it has not enjoyed in several years/after several thousand student visits.
Part of this fundraiser will also go towards putting on live music events in Westwood, providing a space for rising artists and creating an outlet for student creatives. But, we have been severely limited by rising artist and venue fees which can easily break into the thousands; it has become more and more difficult to host shows and events that our community can attend.
YOUR GIFT AMPLIFIES STUDENT VOICES:
Your gift will immediately allow us to revive parts of our station and programming that are currently impossible, like mixing, vinyl broadcast, and podcast production. We will also be able to update much of the equipment that we use to document concerts and festivals in Los Angeles to industry standards:
