We're going to nationals!!

BLU is a nationally ranked club sports team at UCLA open to female and nonbinary athletes interested in playing ultimate frisbee. From freshman to graduate students, first-year players to tenured frisbee athletes, our team welcomes athletes of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds. BLU balances a competitive culture with a welcoming community, allowing our players to both develop as athletes and students. 

Increased financial accessibility aids in the empowerment of our players and the equitable growth of the sport as a whole. BLU's ethos revolves around teamwork, sportsmanship, and embodying the "spirit of the game," and these ideals have brought us success in all aspects of our college experiences.

We compete at five to six USAU-sanctioned tournaments each season across California and the US. This season, we made it our goal to reach Nationals in Rockford, Illinois. At Southwest Regionals, our team secured a bid by placing 3rd in one of the toughest regions in the country. Our players train for many hours each week in order to get better as players and teammates, and we are so proud that we accomplished our goal.

Unfortunately, the financial commitment associated with playing ultimate is substantial. UCLA Club Sports does not provide sufficient aid, so BLU largely relies on self-funding. A single player's dues regularly exceed $350 per quarter to cover tournament fees, transportation, food and lodging, uniforms, and various other expenses. However, these dues do not account for plane tickets to out-of-state tournaments, such Centex in Austin and, soon, Nationals.

Fundraisers like this one are a key way that BLU lowers the cost to play for all athletes. Funds go towards paying tournament fees, covering travel costs (renting vans, gas money, hotels/accommodations), and expanding the financial aid available to players. Frisbee can be an expensive sport and we want to continue to ensure that money is not a barrier to entrance for athletes.
