Support Men's Ultimate - Smaug and Smoke!

Happy 30th anniversary of Smaug Ultimate!!! UCLA Men’s Ultimate is a student-run, competitive program that proudly competes in Division I collegiate tournaments across the country. We’ve been throwing flicks since 1996, and everything we are today is built on the legacy of the 30 years of players who came before us. For some of the seniors, that's players like Dio, Gambit, or Chef (or the many many more I could name), and for them it was players like Sheriff, Sherlock or Phantom. They created a culture rooted in commitment, passion, and genuine friendship—one we are incredibly grateful to inherit and carry forward. Like the Smaug and Smoke teams before us, this year’s team has once again risen to that standard, forming something special both on and off the field.

This season, we’ve grown not just as athletes, but as a family. We push one another to be better competitors, support each other through the challenges of student life, and build bonds that extend far beyond ultimate. From team dinners to late-night study sessions, this team is more than a sport—it’s our community.

Player dues cover the basics that keep our program running: discs, cones, agility ladders, and field rentals. But because ultimate is still a relatively small sport, competing at a high level means traveling across California—and often across the country—for tournaments. Travel costs add up quickly, and that’s where your support truly makes a difference.

To compete, we rent vans, book flights, and find the most affordable lodging possible—often squeezing five players into a single motel room to keep costs down. Our goal is simple: no player should ever have to miss a tournament because of financial constraints. While making every trip completely free isn’t realistic, your generosity allows us to support teammates who need help and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to compete alongside their team. It also helps cover travel for our dedicated coaches, who already give so much of their time and energy to this program.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters last year, we experienced an unforgettable spring season. That support made it possible for us to compete at major tournaments like Northwest Challenge, Sean Ryan, Stanford, Presidents Day Invite, and Santa Barbara Invite. These tournaments were some of the experiences that made up some of our season's best and most memorable moments. We are deeply grateful for everyone who helped make that season possible.

This year, we’ve returned with a large part of the same team from last year, and committed ourselves to building on the foundations we laid last season. We’ve trained hard, raised our standards, and continued the upward momentum that defined our year together. What makes this team special is its culture - one that’s felt not just during games or practices, but in every interaction on and around the team. It’s a culture of accountability, support, and genuine joy in competing together. At the end of the day, what matters most to us is getting to play the sport we love with people who make it meaningful. Your support allows us to keep growing, to keep chasing our goals, and to continue fostering the community that makes UCLA Men’s Ultimate so special.

$2

4 Cones for a Drill

Drills are the backbone of any Smaug or Smoke practice. Four cones can set up any number of helpful drills, or even half of a field!

$5

Tourney Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal, especially before a tournament. Give a Smauggie or Smokie the energy they need to give their all for their team!

$10

1 Disc

What do throwing, catching, getting layout Ds, and spiking have in common? They all require a disc! The classic 175-gram Discraft UltraStar costs $10.

$25

Get 4 players to a tournament

The Chevron™ in Westwood at 10984 Le Conte Ave currently charges $5.00 per gallon of gasoline -- whew! Given that the average sprinter van gets 13 miles per gallon, and that we can fit 8 people into it, this donation covers gasoline for 4 players' transportation to a tournament 119 miles away in San Diego -- and a stick of gum for the driver!

$50

Pair of cleats

Help a player not get his ankles broken more than he already will! We wear them out fast, so new cleats are a prized possession.

$100

1 Night of Great Sleep

Your $100 donation will pay for a motel room that houses five players for one night of a weekend tournament. Just 5 of these $100 donations cover lodging for the whole team for a night!

$500

One Tournament Fee

A $500 donation covers the entire cost of a bid to attend a tournament. Without paying this, we would not be able to attend a given tournament. This donation, simply put, singlehandedly allows us to stunt on teams across the country.

$1,000

Lodging for a Tournament

This donation will cover our entire costs of lodging for the team for a whole weekend tournament!
