If you are able, please consider making a gift in support of the UCLA Department of African American Studies this Black History Month. Every gift allows the Department to continue addressing the most urgent needs of our talented students, supporting groundbreaking faculty research, and hosting meaningful events that bring our scholarship to the public. With your support, we can continue deepening our collective understanding of the Black experience and the ways that it intersects with some of the most urgent issues facing our society today.
The incredible generosity of our community has allowed us to surpass our campaign goal for the past two years, and we have in turn been able to reach new heights as a department. In addition to supporting the work of a number of nationally recognized faculty and preparing our undergraduate and graduate students to become the next generation of leading scholars, we also presented UCLA's first Juneteenth Day Celebration, "Prelude to Juneteenth Day Celebration," last June of 2024. This multi-media concert highlighted the history and cultural significance of Black life in the 20th and 21st centuries, and we were thrilled to welcome our Los Angeles neighbors to this free, public event. We look forward to finding new ways to share our rich and varied scholarship on the Black experience with our communities in Los Angeles and around the world, and these opportunities are made possible through your support.
The African American Studies Department is grateful for all of the support that we receive during Black History Month, both this year and in years past. We also recognize that this moment is particularly challenging for our Los Angeles community as we seek to recover and rebuild from last month’s wildfires. We understand that many of us in a position to help are devoting our time and resources to aiding in the recovery of our affected communities, and we wholeheartedly support these efforts. We in the Department are grateful for any gift made during this time.
