Think. Teach. Transform. 25 Years of Critical Race Studies

Critical Race Studies (CRS) Program at UCLA Law

The mission of the UCLA School of Law Critical Race Studies program (CRS) at UCLA School of Law is to Think, Teach, Transform: think bold, new ideas, teach future leaders and scholars, and transform racial justice advocacy.

As the first law school program in the United States dedicated to incorporating Critical Race Theory into legal scholarship and teaching, CRS is unequaled in American legal education. As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our founding, we face an urgent challenge: attacks on anti-racist education, speech, and research are escalating. Your support is essential to help us continue our work in this challenging environment, ensuring that CRS remains a place of transformative scholarship, rigorous teaching, and impactful mentorship.

CRS has had a profound impact on both UCLA and the broader legal community. Our alumni are leaders in academia, policy reform, legal practice, and advocacy, using their training to challenge systems of oppression and advance justice on issues from criminal justice reform to education equity. CRS attracts a broad range of committed, passionate students from around the world, equipping them with the skills, tools, and knowledge to create meaningful change.

In the next five years, CRS aims to build upon its legacy of pioneering scholarship and advocacy, ensuring its continued leadership in shaping the future of racial justice. We plan to:

  • Enhance Clinical Opportunities: Provide students with more real-world advocacy experiences and strengthen partnerships with community organizations and advocacy groups focused on racial equity.
  • Expand Programming: Host more symposia and public forums to engage the broader community in critical conversations about race, law, and justice.
  • Foster a Robust Network: Strengthen our network of scholars, practitioners, and students dedicated to confronting systemic inequities.

Your contribution will help ensure that CRS continues to advance its curriculum of rigorous racial justice education, producing the next generation of thinkers and advocates prepared to confront both today’s urgent challenges and tomorrow’s unknowns. In a time when hard-fought gains are under attack—together, we can sustain and strengthen a powerful network of scholars, lawyers, and activists working to dismantle systemic inequities. Join us in celebrating 25 years of impact—and help us continue to shape the future of racial justice—inside the classroom, in the courtroom, and beyond.
