Elevating Senior Fellows and Preserving VC Powe’s Legacy
VC Powe, A Proud Bruin
We are excited to announce that the Senior Fellows Program at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs has been officially renamed in memory of VC Powe, our beloved staff member who nurtured the program into a rewarding honor for scores of fellows and hundreds of students. VC Powe BA '75, MBA '77, oversaw career counseling and programs in which public officials, community leaders, and alumni, served as mentors and volunteers. Born in Los Angeles, VC was a pivotal figure at the Luskin School, holding a lasting impact on all the students, faculty and staff members she touched.
Now known as the VC Powe Senior Fellows Program, distinguished leaders are selected from across sectors each year to be inducted into the program. Fellows are invited to contribute their time and expertise through professional mentorship of a current Luskin student and a policy briefing on leadership, management, or a topic relevant to their field of expertise.
Let's Make Change Happen
Since 1997, more than 300 distinguished leaders have provided mentorship, exposure and connections to more than 400 graduate students, bridging academia to the real-world experiences faced by community, policy and political leaders today. The Senior Fellows program was created to: enrich students’ education by giving them access to community leaders, business professionals and policy makers who are especially committed to enhancing human well-being and promoting social and economic justice for disadvantaged populations. Senior Fellows represent a wide variety of policy interests, health, philanthropy, business, security, education, transportation and poverty, for example, and all political viewpoints and social backgrounds. Senior Fellow mentors have volunteered their time to discuss career strategies, provide internships and help secure access to social service programs to students pursuing master’s degrees in Public Policy, Social Welfare and Urban Planning.
How Can You Help?
In recognition of the many accomplishments of our mentees and fellows over the past 27 years, we hope you will join us in supporting the VC Powe Senior Fellows Program with a gift to catapult leadership development to new heights. Your support will enable us to further enhance the experience of about 40-50 students who participate in the program each year by providing resources for additional engagement through alumni panels; career fairs; leadership development; and City Hall Day, where students network with city and county officials and community leaders to study a policy topic and provide city council with policy recommendations. Future City Hall Days will be focused on networking and career education to pipeline students into local government roles. Your gift makes an impact on implementing all of the programming VC Powe dedicated her time at Luskin to evolve. With your support, more students can enhance competencies; augment understanding of the issues and opportunities that exist in the Public Affairs sphere; and actively engage with community leaders. To kick things off we have received a $5,000 gift from VC Powe's husband, Keith Powe. We are hoping to raise $45,000 to achieve our goal.
