Mbalmayo Forest Restoration Team

Meet the Team

We are a Senior Practicum team within the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA working in collaboration with The National Forestry School, Mbalmayo, focusing on the restoration of degraded urban and peri-urban landscapes in Mbalmayo, Cameroon. Our focus is on using nature-based solutions to revive ecosystems at local and global levels, addressing climate change challenges. Our collaborative efforts aim to not only rejuvenate Mbalmayo's landscapes but also serve as a valuable resource for informing restoration programs, including those in California.

Who is The National Forestry School?

The National Forestry School Mbalmayo (NFS) utilizes its Teaching and Research Forest sites, NFS is actively engaged in the restoration, rehabilitation, and (re)connection of ecosystems along the urban-rural interface. The NFS is dedicated to advancing knowledge, bolstering capacities for coordinated urban planning, and promoting exchange and collaboration in the field of restorative nature-based solutions. They are committed to making impactful contributions to the sustainable development of urban and rural landscapes.

What is Our Role?

Restore 100 hectares of degraded urban and peri-urban landscapes by utilizing a mix of exotic and indigenous plant species. This involves identifying and mapping degraded sites, producing or acquiring 20,000 plants of both types, and then preparing the soil for transplantation. The seedlings will be either produced at the ENEF nursery or purchased. Additionally, there will be the procurement of seeds, treatments, and the sowing process in the nursery. Continuous monitoring and care will be provided until the seedlings reach transplant age. We will update forest management parameters in Cameroon, involving the establishment of 15 plots across three ENEF forests situated in different agro-ecological zones. This will include setting a baseline for metrics to facilitate ongoing tracking of progress. Through these comprehensive steps, we aim to contribute significantly to the restoration and sustainable management of our ecosystems.

How will your donations help?

Your generous donations will allow us to build capacities, facilitate learning and exchange, raise awareness, and generate new knowledge on restorative nature-based solutions for reforestation within the Congo Basin and beyond. With your support, we can make a lasting impact on environmental sustainability and contribute to the well-being of communities in the region and around the world.
