Recovery From What?!

Bruins for Recovery (B4R) is a community of students in recovery from drug, alcohol, and behavioral addictions. We host daily peer-peer support groups, throw awesome sober happy hours, and volunteer at community service events! We strive to give our members every opportunity to break out of the fatal isolation of addiction through these and other activities. In pursuit of this goal, we were able to take 12 students to UC Santa Barbara for last year’s Collegiate Recovery Leadership Retreat at no cost to the students, thanks to generous support from the Bruin Resource Center. At the retreat, we connected and collaborated with other student leaders in order to improve our own club and bring home new strategies to best help the addict who still suffers at UCLA. Unfortunately, the Bruin Resource Center is not able to offer the support necessary to get us to the 2020 retreat.

As an anonymous recovery organization, it is not feasible for us to fundraise in a public setting (eg. selling cookies on Bruin Walk) the way most other clubs on campus do. Addiction is a sensitive issue, and the majority of our members are not public about being in recovery. There is a lot of fear around being labeled an “addict”, due to societal stigmas surrounding what this term entails. Your donation today helps to support those Bruins who are not yet ready to be public about their struggle with addiction. Every contribution helps our team get one step closer to attending the conference!

B4R was founded in 2014 when only a handful of students came together for the first time with the goal of creating a safe, sober environment in which UCLA students can flourish. Initially, we hosted 1-2 meetings a week, with only ~5 students in attendance. Since this genesis, B4R has grown substantially. We are now able to host 5 meetings a week with 10-15 students attending regularly, providing a daily resource on campus for our community. The 2019 UC conference was instrumental in our growth as a club. Seeing the accomplishments of other students inspired our members to participate. Of the five students who took leadership positions with B4R this year, all were attendees at last year’s conference. Your support today goes a long way towards keeping this growth going, and ensuring that B4R will always be around to provide support for the UCLA community.
